Counter-Strike surfing, rebuilt as a Roblox race
Surfing only works if the movement is exact, so we ported the Source engine's player movement to Roblox and wrote our own collision for it. Then we turned it into a race for up to 12 players, with knives, snipers, trick reloads and item crates.

The movement is the original's
Surf grew up on Counter-Strike community servers: you land on an angled ramp, hold into it and steer in the air to build speed. Roblox's own character physics can't do it, so the player's movement is a port of the Source engine's: the same tick rate, the same constants and the same order of operations, so years of surf and bhop muscle memory carry over.
Collision is ours too. The map's parts become brushes and the player's box is traced through them the way Quake and Source do it, not handed to Roblox physics. The seams between ramp pieces that stop you dead in Source are smoothed over, as surf servers do.
| 66 tick | movement steps 66.67 times a second, whatever the frame rate |
|---|---|
| 150 | air acceleration, the usual surf-server setting |
| 800 | gravity, the Counter-Strike: Source default |
| 32 × 72 | the player's box; one Source unit is 0.07 studs |
A reason to race
First to the end wins. Everything else is about slowing the others down without losing your own speed.
- Knife and sniper
- A kill sends the other racer back to their last checkpoint. Shots are lag-compensated: the server checks them against where the target was on your screen.
- Trick reloads
- Three bullets, one back every six seconds. Press trick in the air and land it for another; touch down early and you bail and lose a quarter of your speed. A knife kill reloads too.
- Crates
- Shoot one open for an item: boost, low gravity, shield, ammo pack, slow field, mine or frost. The back of the pack draws more speed, the leaders more traps.
- Rails
- Land on a rail to grind it, keep your balance with the strafe keys, jump off for a boost.
- Style
- Surf and bhop moves score points on the side, tallied on the results screen.

Between races
The lobby is a skate park: quarter pipes, a funbox, a ledge, stairs with a handrail and a practice ramp. Players vote for the next map while they wait; leaderboards keep wins and best times per map. Boards, a skateboard or a hoverboard, come out when you build speed and change nothing about the physics. They're the shop.
Maps so far: a test course with every surf and bhop element, and Neon, our own, red light on black.

Made for a tablet first
Most Roblox players are on a phone or an iPad, so touch came first: jump, duck, trick, item, board, fire, scope and weapon swap are all on screen. Keyboard and mouse play like Counter-Strike; a gamepad works too.
